Citytrain & the Community

Citytrain guard

Citytrain stations and services signify an important part of life for many South-East Queenslanders. People use Citytrain to get to work, to school, to travel to major events or to access attractions such as South Bank, or the Gold Coast theme parks.

In recognition of the importance of local knowledge and feedback, QR seeks to involve local communities in as many ways as possible when identifying new crime prevention opportunities or addressing existing crime problems.

The ways in which QR engages with communities include the following:

  • Representation at neighbourhood watch meetings and other community forums
  • Mural work on QR property with school students and community groups
  • Work for the Dole projects
  • Surveys of both existing and potential customers
  • Liaison with community members (including young people) to develop policy
  • Working with Department of Communities to provide alternative justice options for young people caught offending on the network

It is also possible to report crimes that have occurred (or as they occur) on the Trainwatch number of 1800 643 443

Effective reporting is the only way to help stop graffiti, vandalism, and other crimes against people or property on the Citytrain network.

Whole of Government approach to crime prevention

In 1999, the Queensland Government developed and delivered a crime prevention strategy focusing on getting “tough on crime and tough on the causes of crime”.

This strategy, entitled Building Safer Communities (1999), aims to encourage government departments, agencies, and business and community groups to work together to promote safer public and private spaces for everyone.

Crime Prevention Queensland is the lead agent responsible for developing and disseminating the whole of government crime prevention strategy.

In order to work more co-operatively and effectively with government agencies and community groups, QR developed the Crime Prevention Unit in 1999. Since that time, the CPU has fostered productive and on-going relationships with several government agencies and community groups.

They include the following:

  • The Queensland Police Service
  • Department of Communities
  • Queensland Transport
  • Department of Employment and Training
  • Department of Corrective Services
  • Education Queensland
  • Department of Housing
  • Attorney General’s Department
  • Brisbane City Council
  • Gold Coast City Council
  • Logan City Council
  • Pine Rivers Shire Council
  • Redlands Shire Council
  • Neighbourhood Watch groups
  • Various primary and secondary schools
  • Mission Australia
The QR Crime Prevention Unit will continue to develop new and existing relationships to help further the Government’s consolidated approach to crime prevention.
