About your trip

Over a 5 year period more than $39 million has been spent on creating a safe and secure environment for all users of the QR Citytrain network. The information below outlines some of the enhancements Citytrain has made to make your experience as a passenger a safe and pleasant one. » Guardian trains » Lock-up carriages » After Dark initiative » Core safety zones » Lights » Surveillance cameras » Emergency phones Guardian trains Guardian Trains are services that have private security officers onboard for the complete duration of the service. The aim of Guardian Trains is to provide QR Citytrain passengers with further peace of mind while travelling during evening periods. These services are clearly marked by a “G” in the timetable, so that all customers can chose to travel on these services for additional security. These and other services are also subject to random police and Transit Officer patrols.Lock-up carriages To enhance your safety during the evening, QR has adopted international best practice by reducing the number of open carriages available during the evening services. After 7:30pm the front carriage of a 3-carriage train and the first, fourth, fifth and sixth carriages of a 6-carriage train are closed and the lights turned off. This serves to make patrols easier and to prevent passengers from becoming isolated. After Dark initiative To ensure safety and security at stations, QR began rolling out the After Dark initiative in July 2003. The trial involves the introduction of QR staff at selected stations across the QR Citytrain network in the evening periods. The After Dark staff provide friendly and accessible information and assistance to passengers, and a highly visible presence at the station.
Combining a number of key security features, Core Safety Zones are being progressively rolled out across the QR Citytrain network. Core Safety Zones are marked on both the outbound and inbound station platforms by blue-and-white striped lines. Core Safety Zones provide customers with enhanced lighting, an emergency phone and video camera surveillance. For more information see Core Safety Zones.

Railway station platform and car park lighting upgrades are occurring across the Citytrain Network. Enhanced lighting acts as a deterrent to antisocial behaviour and improves the quality of camera surveillance footage. Lighting upgrades will be completed at all Citytrain stations by the conclusion of 2007.
For the safety and security of passengers and staff, surveillance cameras have been installed at over 130 QR Citytrain stations, and also on trains and in customer car parks. Camera footage and images are recorded 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Camera footage is used in the identification and apprehension of offenders.
Emergency Phones have been installed at QR stations, on trains and at selected car parks. At just the press of a button you have direct contact with your QR driver or QR staff at Control Headquarters who can co-ordinate an appropriate response. Emergency phones are generally located near ticket vending machines on stations. On trains, emergency phones are most often found near doors.Key documents:
